A View from England

NAME: Maureen
LOCATION: United Kingdom

I'm an American expat - from Minnesota - residing in the UK. I'm married to an Englishman. We have two sons and we live in a small town near London.

I enjoy reading, writing, gardening, birding, knitting, movies, and going to the theatre.

I frequently blog about the government's plans for an ID card & National Identity Register which I strongly oppose. I'm also interested in issues about parenting, education, health, nature and the environment.

My 10 favourite movies

I know there are people reading my blog (thanks to my site meter) but I don't get a lot of comments (in fact, hardly any Sad so I've decided to try using a meme (an idea, question, statement or project that is posted in one blog and answered to in many other blogs) but I'm going to try and be clever and create my own meme!

I love movies. Most people do. So let's talk movies. I will list my 10 favourite movies and then you can do the same on your blog and leave a comment here letting me know about it. Okay? Here goes:

  1. Bringing Up Baby  This is a very funny old movie (1938) starring my favourite actress (Katharine Hepburn) and one of my favourite actors (Cary Grant). It's what is usually called a "screwball comedy" and one that I never tire of watching.
  2. The Philadelphia Story Another old movie (1940) and also starring Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant plus another great actor, Jimmy Stewart. This is a fun and very funny movie to watch. If you have never seen it, you are in for a real treat!
  3. Mr. Holland's Opus This is a lovely inspirational movie starring Richard Dreyfus. It shows very clearly how important a dedicated teacher is and how many lives he can change.
  4. Erin Brockovich A movie based on a real person and about a very serious subject -a  power company accused of polluting a city's water supply - with Julia Roberts portraying Erin Brockovich. A truly unforgettable story.
  5. Steel Magnolias Very funny and also very sad. The characters are all wonderful women and portrayed by some of Hollywood's best: Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Shirley MacLaine, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis, and Julia Roberts. It's a film to for women about women and absolutely wonderful.
  6. As Good As It Gets I love this movie despite the fact that I don't really like Jack Nicholson (LOL) but I have to admit that he is outstanding in this movie. Very funny but also very touching. Well written, well acted and very entertaining.
  7. French Kiss I actually didn't like this movie the first time I saw it and then I started to watch it again when it was on TV late one evening and I loved it. Go figure. Anyway, this is a romantic comedy that really is romantic and funny (unlike so many movies that are called romantic comedies but aren't) I think it's one of Meg Ryan's best movies. It also stars Kevin Kline and it's filmed in Paris. A real delight.
  8. Meet Joe Black  This is a fantasy movie that appeals to me because it's a sweet romance but it's also about life and death. A difficult movie to describe but I always feel very moved by it. It stars the great Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt.
  9. Beetlejuice I love this movie! It's zany, quirky, silly and ridiculous but it makes me laugh. It's hysterical. Michael Keaton is just wonderful. You just know that a movie that's listed in three genres (comedy/fantasy/horror) is going to be worth watching and it is.
  10. Bend it Like Beckham A movie that is funny, and inspiring. I'm not a sports fan and certainly don't follow football (soccer) but I love this movie. It's a charming movie that makes you feel good. And it's about two strong young women who just happen to be different nationalities. Schools should make it required viewing.

Now it's your turn. Come on people. Don't be shy. Post your list on your blog and then post a link to it on my blog. Let's see what sort of movies are on your lists.

Impressively, I have seen absolutely none of those films.

Hi Will, Thanks for leaving a comment! I'm very surprised you haven't seen any of the movies on my list. Wow! I hope you do see them some day (at least a few if not all) - they are all wonderful movies although I can understand that they wouldn't necessarily be on everyone's "best" movie list.
